Accounting for cafes, restaurants and accommodation

Daily takings, two VAT rates and the OTA invoice

Food at one rate, drinks at another, rooms at a third. Booking platforms pay out net of commission and guests leave tips. Kontevia sorts the takings and the supplier invoices so the month closes without a late night.

Where the paperwork hurts

Several VAT rates on one bill

Meals, alcohol, takeaway and accommodation can carry different rates in the same country. The daily closing has to split them correctly.

OTA commissions

Booking.com, Expedia or Airbnb deduct their commission before paying out. The gross revenue, the commission invoice and the net payout must all be booked.

Supplier invoices every morning

Bakery, wholesaler, drinks delivery: paper invoices at the back door, every day.

What Kontevia does for you

Daily closing by rate

Send the closing slip by chat and Kontevia extracts the takings by VAT rate. Importing POS summaries is planned.

OTA payouts and commissions

Record the gross booking, the platform's commission invoice (often under reverse charge) and match the net payout on the bank statement.

Supplier invoices by photo

Photograph the delivery note or invoice at the back door. Kontevia extracts items, VAT and due date.

Tips and service charges

Record tips separately from revenue, so they do not inflate turnover or VAT.

Kontevia is in early access. Connections to national e-invoicing and clearance systems are not available yet; support is planned country by country.

Rules that apply to you in Ireland

  • The standard VAT rate in Ireland is 23 %.
  • Reduced rates in Ireland: 13.5 %, 9 % and 4.8 %. Which of them apply to meals, drinks and accommodation is set by national law.
  • VAT returns are filed monthly or quarterly, depending on turnover. Deadline: 23rd of the month following the taxable period (via ROS); bi-monthly periods starting Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep and Nov; annual Return of Trading Details and VIES by the 23rd
  • Commission invoices from booking platforms established in another EU country are usually subject to the reverse charge: you account for the VAT in Ireland at 23 %.
  • B2B e-invoicing via Peppol becomes mandatory in 2028. Support in Kontevia is planned.

Rates and thresholds come from our country data for Ireland and are checked against official sources. Always confirm the current values with your tax authority or accountant before filing.

Our sister product DokladBot processed 2,455 documents in its Czech pilot (Apr–Aug 2026). Kontevia runs on the same engine, extended with rules for all 27 EU countries.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kontevia connect to my POS?

Not yet. Importing POS summaries and direct POS connectors are planned. Today you send the daily closing slip by chat and it is extracted like any receipt; tell us which system you use.

How are Airbnb or Booking.com payouts handled?

You record the gross booking revenue, the platform's commission invoice with the correct VAT treatment, and Kontevia matches the net payout on your bank statement to both.

Do tips count as revenue?

That depends on national rules and on whether tips go to staff or the business. Kontevia lets you record them separately so they are not mixed into taxable turnover by default.

Can I use it for a holiday rental?

Yes. Short-term rental income, platform commissions, cleaning and maintenance costs are the same pattern as a small hotel.
