VAT from your documents: a running overview and figures for the return
Kontevia reads the VAT from every extracted document and adds it up continuously, so you see output and input VAT for the period at any time. For Czech companies it also prepares the VAT return and control statement as XML. Tracking the registration threshold of Malta and deadline reminders are planned; today the free tax calendar lists the rates (18 % standard, 12 %, 7 % and 5 % reduced), the threshold and the deadlines.
How much VAT do I owe for Q3?
Q3 so far from your documents: output VAT €1,080, input VAT €346, estimated payable €734. The figures are ready for your accountant.
How it works
Documents with extracted VAT
Every receipt and invoice has its VAT bases and rates read from the document. No manual recalculation at the end of the month.
Running overview
At any moment you see how much output and input VAT has accumulated for the period.
Deadlines
In Malta, VAT returns are filed quarterly. The free tax calendar shows each deadline; reminders in the app are planned.
Figures for filing
For Czech companies, export the VAT return and control statement as XML for the tax portal; elsewhere export the figures as CSV for your accountant. Kontevia prepares, you file.
VAT does not go wrong at the deadline, it goes wrong continuously
VAT problems almost always have the same origin: documents are put together only before the deadline. A missing receipt means an unclaimed deduction, a mistyped rate means an inconsistency in the return and a query from the tax authority. And a business that does not watch its turnover can become a VAT payer retroactively, with an assessment for the period when it did not charge VAT.
When every document has its rates and bases broken down at the moment it is created, the whole agenda turns around: the VAT overview for the period is ready continuously and before the deadline you only check it. The VAT registration threshold in Malta is €35,000 of annual turnover. Automatic tracking of your turnover against the threshold is planned; until then the turnover from your issued invoices is visible in the overview.
Working with your accountant
Kontevia does not replace your accountant, it prepares the ground. The figures for the return arrive complete and machine-readable: documents with VAT broken down and exports that Sage or Xero can import, where the filing is completed. The monthly round of chasing missing documents disappears.
For you it means a lower bill for accounting work and the certainty that nothing is missing. For the accountant it means that instead of retyping receipts they do professional work: assessing borderline cases and optimising.

Frequently asked questions
From what turnover is VAT registration mandatory?
The VAT registration threshold in Malta is €35,000 of annual turnover. Automatic tracking of your turnover against the threshold is planned in Kontevia. Note that the EU small-business scheme changed in 2025 and thresholds remain set per country.
Does Kontevia file the return for me?
No. Kontevia prepares the figures, and for Czech companies also the XML files for the tax portal. The filing itself goes through your accountant, your accounting software or the Malta Tax and Customs Administration (MTCA) / Commissioner for Tax and Customs (CFR) portal.
Does Kontevia help a business that is not VAT registered?
Yes. Documents are extracted including VAT, so a later switch to VAT registration does not mean redoing the records. A warning when you approach the registration threshold is planned.
What about EU cross-border invoices?
For EU business customers with a valid VAT ID, invoices can be issued with reverse charge. You can check the VAT ID with our free VIES tool; an automatic check in the app, EC sales list figures and OSS summaries are planned.
