VAT ID check
VAT number check for Malta and the EU
Verify whether a VAT identification number is registered for intra-EU trade. The check runs against the European Commission's VIES service and returns the registered name and address where the member state publishes them.
This tool is for orientation only. Rates and rules change; confirm with official sources or your accountant before filing.
Frequently asked questions
What is VIES?
VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is the European Commission's service that queries the VAT registers of the member states. A number is valid in VIES when the business is registered for intra-EU transactions.
Why do I need to check a customer's VAT number?
To apply the reverse charge on a B2B sale to another member state you must confirm the customer's VAT number is valid and keep proof. If it later turns out invalid, the tax office can ask you for the VAT.
Why does VIES not show a name or address?
Some member states do not publish the name and address of the taxpayer through VIES for data protection reasons. The number is still valid.
Why does VIES say a real company is invalid?
Common reasons: the company has only a domestic tax number and is not registered for intra-EU trade, the number contains a typo, or the format of that country needs a suffix (for example Dutch numbers end with B01).
Which country code do I use for Greece?
VIES uses EL for Greece rather than the ISO code GR. The tool handles the conversion for you.
