How it works
- Adding VAT: net × (1 + rate / 100) = gross. Example: 1,000 × 1.19 = 1,190.
- Extracting VAT: gross ÷ (1 + rate / 100) = net; VAT is the difference. Example: 1,190 ÷ 1.19 = 1,000.
- Do not subtract the percentage from the gross amount; 1,190 minus 19 % gives 963.90, which is wrong.
Frequently asked questions
Which VAT rate should I use?
For domestic sales, the rate of your own country and the category of goods or services. For B2C sales to consumers in another EU country above the €10,000 OSS threshold, the rate of the customer's country. For B2B sales to a VAT-registered business in another member state, usually no VAT (reverse charge).
Where do the rates come from?
From our country data set covering all 27 EU member states, reviewed against official sources. Rates change occasionally; if you spot a difference, tell us.
How do I calculate the price without VAT?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. With a 20 % rate, 1,200 ÷ 1.20 = 1,000 net; the VAT is 200.
What about reduced rates?
Most EU countries have one or more reduced rates for food, books, accommodation or medicines. The calculator offers the reduced rates of the selected country; which goods qualify is set by national law.
