Frequently asked questions

What is an IBAN?

The International Bank Account Number (ISO 13616) is a country code, two check digits and a national account identifier. Its length is fixed per country, from 15 characters in Norway to 31 in Malta.

How is an IBAN checked?

Move the first four characters to the end, replace letters with numbers (A = 10, B = 11, and so on) and divide by 97. A valid IBAN leaves a remainder of 1. The check catches typos and single missing digits, not a wrong but well-formed account.

Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?

No. The check confirms the structure and check digits only. Whether the account is open and belongs to the person you expect can only be confirmed by the bank.

Why can I convert Czech and Slovak numbers?

Both countries use a national format of prefix-number/bank code that maps directly onto the IBAN. Other countries print the IBAN itself on invoices and statements.
